4. Traditions, culture and craftsmanship in South Tyrol
Here is how Christmas is traditionally celebrated.
On the Thursday before the first Sunday of Advent, the five original South Tyrolean Christmas markets – Bolzano, Merano, Brixen, Bruneck and Sterzing – officially open.
Every Sunday of Advent, a candle on the Advent wreath is lit, stories are read aloud and songs are sung.
Around 5 and 6 December, St. Nicholas and Krampus parades take place throughout the region. Every South Tyrolean visits at least one Christmas market with loved ones during the Advent season.
Many sweet treats are baked during this time – from classic Zelten to delicious Vanillekipferl.
Special celebrations also take place in South Tyrol’s churches:
Midnight Mass, Advent Sundays and services celebrating the birth of Christ are well attended and deeply respected.
On 24 December, Christmas Eve, the tree is decorated during the morning and the entire house is prepared for the holy evening.
In South Tyrol, gifts are traditionally exchanged on Christmas Eve beneath the candles of beautifully decorated Christmas trees.
25 and 26 December are dedicated to family gatherings and spending time together.
But the Christmas season does not end so quickly – the Christmas markets remain open until Epiphany and offer a wonderful programme even after Christmas.
